Art Poster Print - Watson and the Shark - Artist: John Singleton Copley- Poster 16" x 20"

This is a poster of the very famous painting called "Watson and the Shark". It was painted in 1778 in England by John Singleton Copley, and was inspired by an event that took place in Havanna harbor, Cuba in 1749. Copley was commissioned to do the painting by none other than the shocked swimmer depicted in the painting itself, whose name was Brook Watson. Fourteen-year-old Brook Watson, an orphan serving as a crew member on a trading ship, was attacked by the shark while swimming alone in the  harbor. His shipmates, who had been waiting on board to escort their captain ashore, launched a valiant rescue effort. The shark repeatedly attacked Watson, severing his right foot and ultimately mauling his right calf so badly he had to have his leg amputated just below the knee (if you notice the right leg is missing in the painting with a small amount of blood). Watson survived the attack and went on to become a successful merchant in London, England.  I'm not what kind of shark this was. From the painting it looks like maybe a Tiger. The teeth seem to be relatively small compared to what a Great White would have. Also, the eyes. They aren't solid black. Of course Copley wasn't there at the time of the attack. He had to rely on a description from Watson who was obviously in shock and not exactly taking notes during the attack. But the way Copley renders the snout it raises an eyebrow that maybe it could have been a small great white.  We do know it was a fairly large shark. Probably 500-600 lbs. 9-12 ft (3-4m).  TO WALLPAPERS
