I found his biography - "The Hurdy Gurdy Man" - in the local library. On one page he's boasting about how influential he was, and gives a big long list of everyone who covered his songs. At one point it gets to: "...the Butthole Surfers (ouch!)" - that's what he had to say about it, "ouch!", and he makes no comment on any of the other artists mentioned!
