Bruce is an artist in his use of metaphors. Lyrics never have spoken so much truth.

I've never been a big fan of Springsteen but this song is definitely one of my favorites... everything is good about it. It is fun, atmospheric, romantic, sexy and filled with passion... it reminds me of what doesn't need to be spoken.

Boss always had interesting things to say about relationships -- but listening to his earlier songs, I often felt I was being bludgeoned with VERY BIG FEELINGS. Important, yes, -- but exhausting. So the calmness, maturity, ambiguity and introspection of this album is a welcome relief. I play it more than the others (not that the others are bad -- on the contrary, they're some of his best! -- it's just that TOL is less exhausting because it's lyrical, vulnerable). |
