You're right, it does make better cinema, and daft as it is, its a classic scene.

It isn't highly feasible, communicating using technology would be much more efficient. But which makes a better film experience? "Quick, switch on the wi-fi!" or "Quick, call John Williams!"

Electronically. Their computers and our computers could swap more data in a few minutes than an alien with a trombone could manage in several lifetimes. As to the language, anyone who could cross space at hundreds of times the speed of light would find mastering any of our languages or methods of transmission childs play, especially as we've been broadcasting into space for decades.

you suck.hehe, it has something to do with maththats how they understand it.
NickLeyland (December 31, 1969 at 4:59 pm)
so tell me how would you communicate?
Griceinho (December 31, 1969 at 4:59 pm)
no that's just sad that you've noticed that lol

Basically the premise of this movie is that an alien race, advanced beyond our comprehension, crosses countless billions of miles of deep space to bring wisdom to earth, and upon arrival, tries to communicate by tootling on a trombone. Highly feasible.

Mmm. Given a choice, and the whole lot decided that decided their families wouldn't miss them, so they might as well stay on the ship for fifty years. I think not.

Maybe the humans were given a choice to either stay or return to Earth.
